ABOUT US
The Burnley Garrick Theatre Group was founded in 1929 by a group of individuals dedicated to sharing their passion with others. Based in Burnley, we are an active and enthusiastic Theatre Group with events and activities taking place year-round. We like to keep up the energy and excitement, always welcoming new members to take part. Simply put, we love getting together to do what we love.
The Burnley Garrick Club has been putting on plays in Burnley for over 90 years. For many of those years we had our own theatre, but since 1986 we have performed at the Burnley Mechanics.
However, from the season 2010-11 we moved to the new ACE Centre in Nelson. In 2021 we decided to bring the Garrick home, back to Burnley and will continue to perform at Burnley Youth Theatre.
We prepare for our productions at our base in Haggate, near the crossroads of Burnley Road and Halifax Road. Our workshop and rehearsal room are in the building attached to the Haggate Baptist Church. Workshop nights are every Tuesday and Thursday at 7.30 pm to prepare for our plays. Play rehearsal times are decided by the play Director according to the availability of the cast but are usually Tuesdays and Thursdays, too.
The Garrick puts on five plays a season, which starts in September and ends in May. We aim for a mixture of plays, which are usually two comedies and three assorted dramas.
Be a part of the Garrick!
It takes a team of people to put on a production, the average production takes a team of set builders, painters, technicians, wardrobe and props, front of house people, and others as well as the actors and the committee. Everyone who is involved in a show is a volunteer, and we cannot have too many of them, and we can use anyones skills and talents, so it doesn’t matter what your skills or experience are, whether you love the theatre, or just want a hobby we would love to hear from you.
Do you want to act?
As well as the army of people putting the production together and providing a space to perform, we need actors to adorn the stage. We hold play readings through the year, from which the director will choose their cast. Keep an eye out on our events page for upcoming play readings. We also publish this information on our Facebook page, so follow us!
Can you direct a play?
We are always looking for new directors to join us, we ensure that we have a different director for each of our 5 plays a season, and we try to have as big a variety as possible. Not directed before? If you have experience of being involved in productions we also use assistant directors for some productions, or pair you with one of our experienced directors to help hone your directing skills.

Fun fact
The story behind our logo
When the Garrick was founded in 1929 we first performed at an old music hall theatre attached to The Newmarket pub in Burnley. The name of the theatre was the Phoenix. When the council demolished the pub and theatre in the 60’s the Garrick eventually found a new home in Hammerton Street. The renamed it ‘The New Phoenix’. Our logo is a nod to the past and the rich history that surrounds a society that we are so proud to be a part of and push forward for theatre lovers old and new. Like a Phoenix we rise again in our new venue Burnley Youth Theatre stronger than ever.
