An Introduction to The Garrick

The Burnley Garrick Club has been putting on plays in Burnley for over 80 years.  For many of those years we had our own theatre, but since 1986 we have performed at the Burnley Mechanics.  However, from the season 2010-11 we moved to the new ACE Centre in Nelson.

We prepare for our productions at our base in Haggate, near the crossroads of Burnley Road and Halifax Road.  Our workshop and rehearsal room are in the building attached to the Haggate Baptist Church, .  Workshop nights are every Tuesday and Thursday at 7.30 pm to prepare for our plays.  Play rehearsal times are decided by the play Director according to the availability of the cast but are usually Tuesdays and Thursdays, too.

The Garrick puts on five plays a season, which starts in September and ends in May plus an extra play in June.  We aim for a mixture of plays, which are usually two comedies and three assorted dramas.

Plays are selected by the Play-reading Sub-Committee, including those submitted by possible directors at a meeting early in the previous season. That committee reads the plays to evaluate their suitability and practicality and creates a short-list from which five plays are chosen for Committee approval.

Once full Committee approval has been given to the season's choice, the directors are invited to direct those plays.  We usually know the next season's plays by April in the current season.

Plays are usually cast by the Director from an open play-reading.  The play-reading is to help him/her select and finalise the cast.  Play-readings are useful for identifying actors who might be asked to play in future plays.  The Chairman also keeps a list of newer members who want parts in our plays.

The Committee is elected at the Annual General Meeting, but can always co-opt anyone who shows an interest in helping to run the society.  Our Departmental Heads who look after the areas of publicity, costumes, properties, sound, lighting, and set building are always looking for new volunteers and will train anyone who wants to learn new skills.

The Garrick is always looking for help with set design and construction.  We particularly welcome those with artistic, DIY, or management skills, though anybody just interested in theatre will be welcomed and given the opportunity to help in any area they wish.  We also encourage our actors to help the ‘off-stagers’ occasionally; and vice versa.

Garrick members are aged eighteen years or older and currently pay £15.00 per season for membership and insurance cover.
