DIRECTORS NOTES

My Mother Said I Never Should explores the private relationship between mother and daughter; how the bonds of love and jealousy play themselves out against the pressures of each generation's public goals and expectations for women. The play explores how, within this relationship, we lie to each other or hold each other back or push each other on, and how we transcend the lies and demands.

The four characters span as many generations - from the eldest, bom in 1900, to the youngest, bom in 1971.

Charlotte Keatley said, "I set the play across this century because we have witnessed such enormous changes in opportunities between each generation - although many of the desires and stresses for women remain unchanged. I have jumbled chronology because this is not a play about memory, but about the emotional inheritance which impinges on our daily decisions. Likewise the child remains inside the woman, often shouting what the adult refuses to hear".

Keatley stipulates that the setting should simply be a magic place where things can happen. We have tried, in this production, to be faithful to that spirit. The play was first performed at the Contact Theatre, Manchester 1987.
