The action of the play lakes place during the rehearsals and performance of The Beggars Opera. It opens at the end of the final performance and goes back in time over the preceding weeks of rehearsal.


Chorus of Disapproval was first staged at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, in 1994. It was then staged the following year at the National Theatre in London. where the cast included Bob Peck. Michael Gambon, Imelda Staunton and Gemma Craven. It has since been made into a film starring Jeremy Irons, Anthony Hopkins and Prunella Scales.
