Scene 2: Some months later, Friday evening
Scene 3: Eighteen months later around Christmas Evening

The action throughout the play takes place in the staff room of the Cull-Loomis School of English for Foreigners, Cambridge. The time is the 1960s.

First performed on the London stage in 1981 the play was taken on tour the following year and was later presented on television, in all instances with such distinguished actors as John Gielgud, Edward Fox, Prunella Scales, Polly James, Eleanor Bron, Robin Bailey etc. The play has won several awards.
